Week of activities set to promote clean commuting

People who rode a bike, walked or carpooled were rewarded in June 2016 in the 1000 block of Main Avenue with free coffee, T-shirts, candy bars and energy bars as part of Bike to Work Day and Clean Commute Week in Durango.

The city of Durango will host the eighth annual Clean Commute Week, which celebrates walking, rolling, biking, riding the bus and carpooling.

Through a week of events, people can learn about sustainable modes of transportation. The week features such things as micro bike tune-ups at the Durango Farmers Market, the Paul Wilbert Memorial Passeggiata, a community forum, the Pedal vs. Metal Challenge, Bike to Work Day and free transit days all week. Following is a schedule of events:

Saturday, June 24, Durango Farmers Market: 8 a.m. to noon, First National Bank parking lot. Free micro bike tune-ups, free bike registration, Way to Go! Club sign up and more.Monday, June 26, Paul Wilbert Memorial Passeggiata: 4:30 p.m., Buckley Park. Ride laps and finish up at Carver Brewing Co. for the community forum.Monday, June 26, Community Forum: 5-7 p.m. Carver’s, 1022 Main Ave. Join the city and others to learn about projects throughout Durango.Tuesday, June 27, Pedal vs. Metal Challenge: noon, Transit Center. Participate on bikes, motorcycles, cars and foot to run errands around town. Wednesday, June 28, Bike to Work Day: 7-9 a.m., Durango Coffee Co. and Mercy Regional Medical Center will have stations with free T-shirts, snacks, coffee and more. As part of the day’s event, Trails 2000 will lead commute team rides to Mercy and the Tech Center.
